SSWSC Plans to Mitigate Effects of COVID-19/Coronavirus

SSWSC Plans to Mitigate Effects of COVID-19/Coronavirus

May 6, 2020

By Carlos Febus, General Manager

We have noticed a significant increase in water consumption over the last few weeks, even with adjusting for seasonal increases due to the spring/summer months.  We expected to see increased water consumption by our Members and customers due to stay-at-home orders issued by the authorities, but the consumption trend we’ve been seeing so far points to potentially historic water consumption amounts.  This is occurring even though we are under year-round water use limits.

To re-iterate, here is S.S. Water’s year-round water use policy, known as “Stage 0,” as published in our Tariff:

(a) Water customers are required to limit the irrigation of landscaped areas to two days per week: Sundays and Thursdays for customers with a physical address ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8); and Saturdays and Wednesdays for water customers with a physical address ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9).  Irrigation of landscaped areas is prohibited between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

(b)  Water customers are requested to practice water conservation and to minimize or discontinue water use for non-essential purposes.

(c)  Violations and Penalties:

1)  First Violation: The customer/member will be given written notice of their specific violation and their need to comply with the Tariff rules.  The notice will include a list of penalties to be assessed for continued violations.

2)  Second Violation: The member/customer will be assessed a $50 penalty for this violation.

3)  Third Violation: The member/customer will be assessed a $75 penalty for this violation.

4)  Fourth Violation: The member/Customer will be assessed a $100 penalty and the Corporation personnel will install a flow restrictor at the member’s meter. The member will be charged an additional $50 for the installation plus the cost of the flow restrictor.

5)  Subsequent Violations: The member will be assessed a $125 penalty.

We ask that you please adhere to this policy, since adherence benefits all of our Members and customers.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Respectfully,

Carlos
